A Model for Effective
Online Instructional Design by Li-Ling Chen
Li-Ling
Chen's article "A Model for Effective Online Instructional Design"
presents a model for designing effective online courses. The model is based on
the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation)
instructional design framework and includes three main stages: pre-design,
design, and post-design. Using the old method, ADDIE and Dick and Carey model
students may get baffled. Analysis, design, develop, implementation and
evaluation are the stages of ADDIE model. It analyzes the concerned elements
like people, environment and constraints. Design and development include what
to include and how much time to be designated, what are the exercises to be
assigned etc. are concerned in this model. After implementation it needs or
begs for feedback relating to the maxims to be improved or not.
Unlike
the aforementioned models like Dick and Carey and ADDIE model ID model lies at
the front. The former two are inefficient in modern context. These models are
based in physical presence rather than online base. Students got baffled by the
former twos. This article also focuses on different kind of online
instructional design models such as; Alonso, Lopez, Manrique, and Vines’
E-Learning instructional model, Instructional Design Model for Online Learning
(IDOL), Roblyer’s online and blended learning design theory, Online instruction
rubric by Quality Online Learning and Teaching (QOLT), and Quality Matters
(QM). However online model is beneficial in the current situation. Use of
multimedia, effective assessment techniques are some of the important phenomena
of this model. In this model, predesign and post design stage takes place.
In
the pre-design stage, Chen suggests that designers conduct a needs analysis and
identify the learning objectives, target audience, and assessment methods. In
the design stage, the course structure and content are developed, including the
organization of materials, instructional strategies, and multimedia elements.
Chen emphasizes the importance of creating interactive and engaging activities
to enhance the learning experience.in this stage, the target audience are taken
into consideration, environment, the ways of evaluation and management of ICT
and multimedia are discerned. Moreover, in this stage, the way of delivery and
the contents to be encapsulated are considered.
In
addition to that, the post-design stage includes the implementation of the
course and the evaluation of its effectiveness. As we know that online model
follows the identify, choose, create, engage and evaluate at last. Chen
suggests using both formative and summative evaluations to measure the success
of the course and to identify areas for improvement.
Overall,
Chen's model emphasizes the importance of a learner-centered approach to
instructional design, the use of interactive and multimedia elements, and the
need for ongoing evaluation and improvement. Beyond that, it emphasizes upon
the use of technology in knowledge acquisition through the ICT means. With the
globalization, people are becoming busy in different sectors, so physical
presence bears the less emphasis. However, the online mode of learning and
online model is the need of time.
